Bass Lessons North Hollywood

I offer comprehensive lessons in both upright and electric bass, alongside music theory, harmony, sight-reading, and song analysis, all from my home studio in North Hollywood. My formal education was at California State University, learning from the esteemed Gary Pratt and Oscar Meza, the Assistant Principal Bassist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Equally formative, however, was my immersion in the practical music scene, having played professionally since I was fifteen.

My musical journey began in the world of musical theater, where I honed my skills in reading music and playing various instruments, including becoming proficient on the piano for rehearsal accompaniments. This diverse experience laid a foundation that spans genres from jazz and Latin to pop, rock, and orchestral music.

In teaching bass, my aim is to impart actionable musical knowledge rather than focusing solely on technical skill. I believe the essence of musicianship is understanding your instrument’s role within the broader context of the music you’re playing. To me, a deep grasp of musicality, song structure, and composition is paramount, as these elements naturally enhance instrumental mastery.

Therefore, my bass lessons are structured around three core elements: grooves, song analysis, and reading music. In each session, I introduce a variety of grooves—Latin, Motown, swing, etc.—to equip my students with a versatile musical vocabulary. This approach ensures that upon encountering new music, you’re prepared to craft bass lines that are not only confident and supportive but also integral to the song’s rhythm and harmony. It’s about seeing the recurring patterns across music genres and understanding how the greats have articulated these grooves. Mastery here means when it’s your turn to play, everything just clicks—because if the bass isn’t right, the song doesn’t come alive.
